I had no idea who to draw, so I consulted my friends (Ally Dworetsky and Jenna Rollins), and naturally they wanted me to draw them. Originally, I was reluctant, but when I couldn't think of anything else, I decided I would draw Jenna.
However, before actually drawing a face, I wanted to focus on mouths. I've struggled in the past with drawing mouths, so I found an instructional blog online (see citation at bottom) and practiced. These are the results:
The first one I did (on the left) wasn't that great, but I felt like I improved more during the second drawing. Then I felt ready to take on the task of drawing one Jenna Rollins.
It took me about two and a half hours to draw Jenna, and I video-taped the entire thing. I then cut out the most boring parts (such as sketching the outline) and (somehow) got the video down to about seventy minutes. The song that I picked to play in the background is about 3:05, so I had to speed up the video a lot (2300%, actually). (This involved using three different video-editing programs, which made it surprisingly difficult just to speed up video... But this blog is about drawing, not my struggles with frustrating video programs.)
And here is the finished product:
I can't really describe my techniques for drawing other than that I sketch the general shape and then started shading and adding detail. Generally, I start with the eyes, since they give life to the drawing. From there I usually spread from the center out, by working on the nose, then the hair, etc. Hopefully the video sufficiently shows the process.
I did a little practice on clothing when drawing Jenna's shirt, but I will definitely do much more intensive practice in two weeks (during my clothing-focused week). Next week I will focus on hands.

These drawings are beyond amazing! The drawing of Jenna looks practically like her! I like how you are picking a different part of a full body portrait to focus of drawing. Seeing you do this has given me the idea to do something like that for my project by choosing a different part of American Gothic, Mr. Perlman, or Mr. McDaniels to paint. Then by the end I will be able to put it all together in a final product. I can't wait to see your final product after seeing these drawings!
Wow your drawing is incredible! I've tried sketching but I can never get the shading right. Your shading here is perfect. Also, I agree; drawing mouths is the hardest part for me too (well, drawing facial features is hard for me in general.) I can't wait to see your drawing next week!
I'm actually blown away by both the quality of the drawings and the amount of time you've been willing to put into it. It really shows how determined you are to improve, and that's an awesome quality. The video too looks really professional, and I know you put a lot of time and effort into that as well. I like how you put pictures of your progress in the posts. It's just so awesome ah. You will definitely do Walk the Moon justice. I wanted put a WTM pun here but I'm too tired. Good luck and I'm super excited to see your journey through drawing hands and feet!
Annie, I don't know who you drew, someone named Jenna? But that person is actually the most beautiful person I've ever laid eyes on. Just Kidding! Hahaha, but wow seriously that picture looks fantastic, it really really looks like me, amazing job!! The time lapse video is super cool, i think you should include one of those in each blog post, I really enjoyed watching it. I seriously wish i had your talent, but I think I'll stick to stick figures (no pun intended) for now. Do you think drawing hands and feet is going to be harder or easier than drawing my face? If it is going to be easier, then what will be the hardes thing to work on? I can't wait to see everything else you get to drawing, GOOD LUCK! P.S. If you ever need a model again, just give me a call! ;)
THIS IS CRAZY! I really like this project, and the finished product is going to be really interesting. The discipline it takes to sit down and draw a face for two and a half hours is mind-boggling. It's clear that you have made progress from the practice though, the picture turned out really well. What will you use to help you draw hands and feet? Have you done any research into anatomy to help you figure out what should be detailed to make it life-like? I honestly have no experience with drawing, but I think that's what Da Vinci did. The time lapse is really awesome, I may request some advice in doing one for my project. I look forward to the full-body drawings!
